Alex Samely

Alex Samely teaches Jewish Studies and philosophy at the University of Manchester, England. Trained at Frankfurt and Oxford Universities, he publishes on contemporary philosophical issues (Reading and Experience, 2024) and on the hermeneutics and literary genres of Jewish antiquity (Forms of Rabbinic Literature and Thought, 2007; Profiling Jewish Literature in Antiquity, 2013, Rabbinic Interpretation of Scripture in the Mishnah, 2002). Alex is interested in the analysis of bodily and culturally diverse experiences of the everyday, including, in certain societies, text reading. He also seeks to explore if general phenomenological insights into the reading process can help with the task of interpreting evidence for historical reading practices in different cultures.
