Launch of the Intercultural Philosophy association and Doing Metaphysics in a Diverse World

25 June 2025; British Academy (London)

Doing Metaphysics in a Diverse World: How We Make Sense of Things Across Cultures is the product of five years of conversations amongst philosophers about the way different cultures think about things.

These conversations began as a lockdown project in 2020 and culminated in a volume with contributions from sixteen philosophers from around the world. Drawing on philosophical texts and themes from China, Japan, the European, Indian and Islamic thought worlds, as well as on pre-colonial African and pre-Colombian Mesoamerican traditions, the contributors bring thinkers, texts and perspectives with very different cultural hinterlands into conversation, across traditions and across time.

The book is a milestone on a journey which will continue with the launch of the Intercultural Philosophy Association, an open forum available to all who are interested in cross-cultural conversation on what matters most deeply to human beings. The Intercultural Philosophy Association website, featuring more information about the association and its members, as well as short articles or videos related to intercultural philosophy, will go live by the date of the launch event.
